I have been married for 27 years and husband now wants out. After many tears and pleading with him to seek counseling, he has refused and says it is over. We own a home, a beach condo, have a 401K, IRA, and he is 1/3 owner of a successful business for the last 8 years. Bottom line...how do I find out what my rights are and what I am entitled to since I have been very supportive all these years. I have been a stay at home mother for the last 5 years and last child is off to college in the fall so I am diligently looking for employment. He says his business is floundering is probably worth $300,000 at best which I do not believe...how do I find out the true worth of it so I can be sure I receive what is coming to me? We are agreeing to stay in the home together til Aug. when daughter leaves for college at which time we will put house up for sale or he will buy me out because I cannot take care of it on my own. Am I also entitled to half of his retirement since we have been together so long? So many questions and not sure what kind of lawyer and who would be a good lawyer here in Charlotte, NC. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Husband said he did NOT want to involve a lawyer because we will both end up with zero after we pay the lawyer but now he is saying we can use a lawyer as long as we use the same one????

You get your own lawyer !!! It would be to your husbands advantage for you to have the same lawyer as he does. You will be entitled to many benefits. Half the house, half of all assets, half of the pension.........do not be afraid. Get your own lawyer and fight for what is yours. You have the rest of your life to think of. It isn't over....even though you might feel like if it is. Be strong. Knowledge is power. Find out all you can.
